That's what scholars who did research on the Hmong said about what the word Hmong meant. This Hmong dude who got his phD decided it meant "FREE PEOPLE" but I dont think you could clearly define the word. Words are just strokes of color/pixels/lines/ink/etc.

If i asked what Mexicans meant, there would not be an answer for it because clearly you'd have to describe the country, the peoples origin, its culture, so on so forth to clarify what that race is.

Hmong is Hmong, like Mexican is Mexican, and American is American...but when you start putting defined labels on it, it clearly can mislead an audience to the meaning of the word.

It's a complicated matter, you should take an asian american class, do research, ask acknowledged elders and scholars about the meaning of the word "Hmong".

Hmong does not mean free people. period. if you ask the hmong people in asia if hmong meant free people, they would look at you like wtf? having said that, hmong also does mean "free people." let me explain. like living creatures, language can also evolve. Since it's introduction into the western world "Hmong" was translated into "Free People." it was a mistake. BUT it caught on. The hmong commuity after so much suffering with the secret war in the south east longed for an heroic image, thus adopted that meaning. so you see Hmong does't mean free people, yet at the same time it does. it's a word in the making.
