I wouldn't go for brand. In these days, basically all brands build as well as any other does.
You should go for the specifications of a laptop. Such as, their processor speed, harddrive space, screen size, other drives (dvd-r, cd-r), built-in Wifi, RAM, plugs and ports that you might need/want, maybe even the on-board video and sound, and etc.

get a Sony Vaio, it'll serve you fine. I just like how the Vaio looks like

But yeah, for me, I'd probably get something like this?
