Perhaps time has changed, but when i was growing up in the 90's the word "Hmong" was a synonym for ghetto for us teens. I went through my own phase of quietly hating myself for being Hmong, because i grew up with other ethnicities and they looked downed on Asian, or Hmong people. To be honest with everyone i wasn't proud of being Hmong until I started getting involve with the Hmong community. and every time i hear or see those ignorant Hmong folks who "hates" being Hmong, i know they're only hating themselves, but i also see in them, once a young me. Thanks for posting plz keep it coming.

We all know that yes, there has been quite a numerous amount of absurd actions performed by many Hmong people. But I'm sure we all do realize that acts of stupidity really just falls within individuals rather than a whole race.
What I'm saying is that many Hmong kids these days are ashamed of being Hmong because of the fact that Hmong people are very well targeted by other ethnics for individuals' (who happen to me Hmong) actions that have portrayed ignorance and stupidity. With that, one feels the pressure to conform within the 'in' group and just go along with the overwhelming, overpowering group of hatred rather than be the next target due to standing up for oneself and his/her ethnic of being Hmong.

I'm quite proud of being Hmong, but it seems that conformity and pressure has really gotten through to the mindless brains of youths nowadays. =)

the 90s were a hard time for the hmong youth. those were the days when all i heard about were gangs and girls sneaking out hehe. the second generation (kids around 10 and under right now) are getting out of the old image and being really Americanized quickly. some cant even speak hmong. a lot of the young hmong people are getting better jobs now and going further with education and the community is getting recognized more. i see people make funny comments and just say random things in this post hehe, but what i say is if youre mad about something, then do something about it. ive heard this topic for a decade now and wonder why people still feel the same about it. the community isnt gonna change if no one wants to start that change...

i feel you on that one Hype Nation. But just a FYI, we have been doing a lot to try to change things;and i feel like things have changed a lot. we all have try to change the Hmong community one way or another, whether it be through school, fashion, music, writing, politics, etc. The peeps from my generation and before can tell that times have change. I MEAN COME ON It's 2009, almost 2010 it's been almost 50 years in the making.

Well personally, Im not ashamed nor proud of it. I would say Im Hmong. But just leave it at that.

I can see why some people are ashamed.

Because of some of our moral and values.
Like...Some families still believe that girls shouldnt go out and do anything, like sports, or any extra curricular activites.
They believe that only the girls should work around the house doing the chores, when the boys should be washing the dishes and helping out also.

Something esle, Hmongs strongly dislike gays, bisexual, etc. I find myself able to accept this, and I know some elders who finally found it in themself to accept this also, but thats only a small population of it.

This is just some examples of some reason why some people may feel like they don't want to be Hmong.
Because if they were to be white, black, or anything else, it'd be easier for them to go around doing whatever they'd like.

I am very blessed to be Hmong, a culture and group that is so unique. But there are always advantages and disadvantages.

I used to be so ashamed when I was much younger. Maybe because my parents were so friggn strict, controlling, &old-fashion, etc... I grew up in a white neigborhood, and used to be discrimated against. When i was 2 y/o, i used to wonder what Chinks means. I was very aware of what was going on, even though I didnt understand it. No one at that time knew what hmong was, and cant even pronouce it. Nor can they even pronouce my name right. Other asians called us Meow, barbarians, etc...* i remember one time, a laotian girl said to me, that hmong was the lowest class asian...haha! I just want to laugh about it now.

Things change when you get older....

Though we aren't the best or at the top. Appreciate where you came from. Because where you came from is what made you the person you are. It could be worse you know.

Cause there are some dumbasses out there that disgraces our name. Duh!! As much as I am ashamed cause of those dumbasses, I never deny who I am.

I LOVE BEING HMONG!!! Back then they would ask me what nationality I am and I would say I am Hmong!! And the would say wat is that??? And so on... But now and days it's just like youre Hmong huh?? Soooo yea. I love being Hmong though I don't understand why other Hmong people wouldn't like being Hmong.

But as for me I think Hmong people are VERY/SUPER/REALLY UNIQUE! Bcause of our history. No one knows exactly where we came from, what we are (other than Hmong), how we came to be? One day I would like to know exactly how Hmong people came to be, yes there are a lot of stories about China, Mongolia, and even Korea! But they can all b true to, well I think.

I have no regrets being Hmong, I actually think every Hmong person is unique, I guess they just don't see it how I see this. But every persons got their own opinion.
